Spanish composer and pianist brings music, memory and architecture together in a distinctive artistic experience celebrating the cultural connections between Spain and Italy.

SYDNEY, Oct. 27, 2026 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Spanish composer and concert pianist Javier Rodríguez will present The Silent Mediterranean, a new multidisciplinary artistic project in Sydney on 5 November, featuring the world premiere of a newly commissioned composition alongside the Sydney premiere of Pietra e Mare. The project is jointly commissioned by the Instituto Cervantes Sydney and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Sydney, bringing two cultural institutions together to support contemporary composition and foster dialogue between Spanish and Italian artistic traditions.

Conceived as an experience that extends beyond the conventional piano recital, The Silent Mediterranean explores the connections between music, landscape, memory, architecture, light and silence. Through cinematic piano writing and poetic reflections, Rodríguez invites audiences to discover a Mediterranean sensibility shaped not by familiar stereotypes, but by the deeper emotional and cultural connections that unite Spain and Italy.

At the heart of the programme are two new compositions commissioned jointly by the two institutions.

The first, Pietra e Mare (Stone and Sea), explores the relationship between two defining elements of the Mediterranean landscape. Translating their textures, contrasts and enduring presence into music, the work reflects on the meeting of permanence and movement, material and nature. It will receive its Sydney premiere as part of the concert.

The evening culminates in the world premiere of The Silent Mediterranean, the new composition that gives the project its name. Bringing together the work's central themes of landscape, memory and silence, the piece forms the artistic centrepiece of the programme and offers a personal musical reflection on the cultural imagination shared across the Mediterranean.

Where music meets architecture

The project further expands the boundaries of musical performance through La puerta sin Puerta, a collaboration between Rodríguez and architect Enrique Blanco de Córdova. Bringing musical composition into dialogue with architecture, the work explores how space, light, material and sound can shape a shared artistic experience.

This interdisciplinary approach reflects the project's wider vision: to create a space in which different art forms and cultural perspectives meet, revealing new ways of experiencing the Mediterranean through contemporary artistic expression.

A shared commitment to contemporary artistic creation

The joint commission by the Instituto Cervantes Sydney and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Sydney underscores the role of cultural institutions in supporting new work and creating opportunities for artistic exchange. Through this collaboration, Spanish and Italian cultural perspectives meet in Australia through original composition and interdisciplinary practice.

For Rodríguez, The Silent Mediterranean brings together several strands of his artistic practice, connecting concert music with cinematic expression, poetic storytelling and collaboration across disciplines.

An award-winning Spanish composer and concert pianist, Rodríguez has developed a body of work spanning concert music, film, theatre and ballet, alongside collaborations with architects, designers and cultural institutions across Europe, Asia and Australia. His musical language is characterised by cinematic lyricism and emotional depth.

With its combination of two commissioned compositions, an architectural collaboration and an exploration of shared cultural heritage, The Silent Mediterranean offers Sydney audiences an opportunity to experience contemporary music as a meeting point between artistic disciplines, cultural memory and the landscapes that connect Spain and Italy.
